Lucky You!

Author: Dr. Gary S. Goodman

There is a cool scene in the movie, The Bourne Identity, starring Matt Damon, in which a young woman is driving him along an escape route through the Alps.

She tries to learn more about him, but he replies that he cant remember anything.

Instead of pitying him, she quips: Lucky you!

She has a point, you must admit.

What would be the impact on us if we forgot nearly everything, but we still had our faculties and abilities, like Bourne?

Certainly, wed forget some wonderful memories, and that would be a loss. But wed also forget some of our bad experiences, our limitations, and our regrets.

Its the second part of our loss that the driver is facetiously celebrating.

Lucky you! means you have today, alone, and with it a tremendous opportunity to reinvent yourself, unfettered.

The present would become a fresh vehicle, with very few miles on the odometer and you could drive it anywhere. It wouldn't have any rearview mirrors, because, without a past, theres no need to look back.

Why waste your time?

Of course, this is a message for everyone, isnt it?

Today is a fresh day, it has never happened before, and with it, we face unlimited opportunities, if we'll unflinchingly face forward.

The only thing that can slow us down is our personal history, and our debilitating habit of looking back for our guidance.

Carlos Castaneda, anthropologist and best-selling author, says through his character, Don Juan, that we would be better off forgetting our personal histories.

Amnesia isnt required.

You should do this one-day at a time.

Naturally!
