The Pros and Cons of Distance Learning

Author: Natalie Aranda

Distance education may be an amazing resource for someone who can only commit a few hours a week, but it is not for everyone. Like every other situation in the world, distance education programs have both pros and cons. Nevertheless, it can be a great experience as long as you know what to expect along the way.

The best part about distance learning education is that you go at your own pace! It is great for people who are in desperate need of a flexible schedule. We all know how difficult it is to work while still have time to study. It's almost an impossible task, unless you are willing to give up the rest of your needs in life. For those who are dying for a balance, online distance education allows you to plan a schedule around your convenience. Most programs have a particular website you log into; complete with lesson tutorials and videos for you to watch when you have the time. Then you easily complete the assignments and pass them in by the deadline. It is also very affordable, since you do not have to worry about housing or meal plans. It's a cheaper way to not only get a degree, but also avoid the commute to campus.

Another great reason why people love distance education is that it is wonderful for people who cannot comprehend the fast paced material taught by teachers. Many people have difficulties understanding concepts on the spot, especially if it is within a large class. Therefore, studying through distance education can provide you with all of the time you need. If also is a great resource for people who are shy and anxious when in large groups of people, and for people who physically cannot get to the campus. Nonetheless, it provides a wonderful environment for anyone who is stuck otherwise.

Although distance learning education can be a great tool for someone who is restricted, it also can have its setbacks. Many people require personal attention from teachers. By working with an online education program, it is impossible to get the direct attention you need. Most distance education programs only give you the phone number or the e-mail address of your online professor. You also must know the latest technology and be savvy with computers. For people who know nothing about the internet, it may be more confusing to figure out the program itself than the lesson plans. Another problem is that interaction is almost nonexistent. Classes do not interact besides during an occasional chat room, therefore making it impossible to meet new faces and make friends. Interaction is sometimes key, especially during group activities! If you are a procrastinator or need specific directions, online education may not be for you. It is extremely easy to put off homework, especially if you know that no one will be hounding you for it.

If you are a student who is in need of a few educational alternatives, then distance education programs may be for you. Although there are cons to the situation, it is very beneficial to get your degree. No matter how much time you work at your job, getting a degree online is possible. It may take a few years, but distance education will get you to where you want to be.
