Is Your RV or Motor Home Solar Powered Yet?

Author: Lance Winslow

If you own an RV or Motor Home with a generator then you know that they use between one and two gallons of fuel per hour. Consider if you will the cost of fuel at $3.00 per gallon. That is between $3 and $6 per hour or more, plus if you run it for 6-8 hours per day you are costing yourself some $18.00 to $48.00 per day you see? And well that is a lot of money considering all you are doing is running a few basic appliances.

Now with the higher prices it makes sense now more than ever to convert to solar power as the Return on Investment now makes so much sense. For me, Saving money is a kick really, I think it is cool. But really I also want to remove the CO2 around me when I work or wish to sit outside of the motor home. A good Solar System for an RV might cost $10,000 but it should pay for its self fairly quickly at these higher fuel prices.

It just makes no sense to run a generator all day and breath fumes really and pay the extra costs. There is some great work being done out there at Arizona State University, BP Solar and so many other Universities and Research Centers. Having been a fan of the MIT Newsletter it is great to see the new stuff coming soon to market and this is a positive step for those who live off the grid or wish to start. Consider this in 2006.
